The Luxury Renaissance of Sunny Isles Beach



In the past few years, and especially since 2001, the City of Sunny Isles Beach has experienced an incredible Renaissance and construction of beautiful luxury hotels and residential condo buildings.  Once traditionally a relatively quiet and affordable destination for tourists, Sunny Isles Beach was the destination of such traditional hotels as The Aztec, Foutainhead, The Varadero, The Castaways, and over 30 others.  As a child, many of us probably share memories and stories having stayed in these traditional motels with our families.  Almost all of these old, 1940- 1960 era smaller hotels and motels have been replaced by luxury condominium towers with the latest amenities and luxury features.

A little known fact is that The Beatles were some of the famous visitors to Sunny Isles Beach, which made famous the Castaways Motel’s Wreck Bar on Collins Avenue. The Castaways Motel was one of first traditional motels demolished in the early 1980′s to make way for the Oceania Towers, the first luxury condominium complex built on this site in the early 1990′s.

A few of the more prominent Sunny Isles luxury condominium buildings built in the former “motel row” along Collins Avenue in the past ten years include:

The Le Meridian Beach Resort, which is the site of the Old Tangiers Motel.  This is a very popular luxury beachfront hotel located at 18683 Collins Avenue near the northern end of Sunny Isles Beach.

The most prestigious of the Trump named properties – Trump Royal, Trump Palace, and Trump Beach Resort which are located on the beachfront site of the Old Colonial Inn Hotel.  These luxury buildings go from Collins Avenue starting on 180th Street up to 182 Street.

The Acqualina Hotel & Luxury Residences located 17875 Collins Avenue.  This is one of the few AAA Rated True Five Star Beachfront Resorts in South Florida.  With a very unique Italian architectural style, these condo-hotel residences have set a new standard for luxury hotels and residences not just in Sunny Isles, but for all of South Florida.

Jade Ocean is THE most contemporary luxury condominium building in all of South Florida.  Designed by famed Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, it is located on the site of the Old Driftwood Motel.  The all-glass structure is unique and modeled after similarly designed buildings in Dubai and Buenos Aires.

Jade Beach located at 17001 Collins Avenue has 248 ultra-luxury cotemporary condominiums, with amenities rivaling the other top condominium buildings in the area such as Turnberry Ocean, Aqualina, and Jade Ocean.  This is the site of the old Beverly Towers located at 17001 Collins Avenue.

The Trump Towers I – III, located at the southern end of Sunny Isles Beach, and just north of South Florida’s only “official” nude beach in Haulover Park.  These three luxury Towers are the site of the old Fountain head, Varadero I and II, and Days Inn Motels.

Worthy of mention as well is the new Epicure Gourmet Market, located at the site of the Old Rascal House on the west side of the street at 17190 Collins Avenue.  A mixed use retail and residential condo tower was planned for this site a few years ago.
